No radioactive waste (including isotopes, items known to be or possibly contaminated with radiation, or radiation-emitting equipment) may be disposed of by conventional waste streams. More detailed information can be found in HSE908.

  • The JHMI corridor utilization policy prohibits the storage of radioactive waste in corridors. Corridor freezers and/or refrigerators containing radioactive materials must be kept locked.
  • Sink Disposal – Each Authorized User is permitted to dispose of 5 microcuries any day into the sink. The material must either be readily soluble in water or biological material readily dispersible in water. The waste may not contain chemical compounds or biohazardous materials that are not permitted to be disposed of in sinks.  Some scintillation fluids may be disposed of by the sink. These disposals do not require documentation. Some Authorized Users have requested and have been authorized to dispose of more than 5 microcuries in the sink daily.
  • Caution signs for sinks used to dispose of radioactive liquids are available from the Radiation Control Unit.
