Our Mission


We are responsible for promoting the safety of the Johns Hopkins community through effective occupational and environmental management practices. Occupational & Environmental Safety, a division of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), provides services and leadership in the areas of environmental monitoring, fire safety, biological safety, radiation safety, chemical safety, laboratory safety, facility and equipment safety and employee safety training programs. Our goal is to provide responsive service and critical support to ensure that Johns Hopkins is a safe environment in which to work, study, and live.

Biosafety

Supports the Hopkins community in ensuring a safe, compliant environment while serving as a technical and training resource for biological safety.

Chemical Safety

Ensures the safe management of hazardous chemicals through compliance with OSHA, EPA, and MDE regulations, providing guidance, training, and oversight on safe practices, risk controls, and incident response.

Physical Environment

Establishes a safe, functional, and compliant healthcare setting by managing safety, security, hazardous materials, fire safety, medical equipment, utilities, and emergency preparedness.

Occupational & Environmental Safety

Promotes a safe work environment by guiding all aspects of safety programs, from hazard management and training to environmental control, fire safety, and facility design.

Radiation Safety

Ensures the safe, effective use of radiation in research, medicine, and education while complying with all regulatory standards.

Research Safety

Partners with the research community to promote compliance and best practices through comprehensive safety programs, training, consultations, surveys, and support for laboratory design and compliance.
