Certifications & Maintenance
Biological Safety Cabinets (BSCs) must be certified on an annual basis at minimum. Certain environmental or laboratory conditions may necessitate more frequent certifications.
The Biosafety Office maintains a professional in-house certification and maintenance team staffed with NSF-accredited technicians for field-certification. Our BSC team operates as a service center for the Hopkins community and, thus, is able to provide rapid response service “at cost” resulting in significantly reduced investigator fees and equipment down-time.
Annual BSC certifications and any required maintenance may be scheduled by contacting the Biosafety Office at [email protected].
Proper gas decontamination must be completed by the BSC Service Center, or an approved vendor, before a biological safety cabinet can be relocated. Contact the BSC Service Center ([email protected]) to schedule both decontamination and the required recertification after relocation.
Assessments
The RLS Office serves as a resource for the purchase of your biological safety cabinet (BSC). To ensure system adequacy, all BSC purchases, installations, and relocations must be vetted through the Director of Biological Research Lab Safety (DBRLS). Relocation and changes in BSC ventilation configurations must also be cleared through a DBRLS. Feel free to contact us at [email protected] for any BSC assessment-related questions.
