The Johns Hopkins laser safety program aims to promote and ensure compliance with recommended laser safety practices, enforce laser safety policies, and provide guidance for the safe use of lasers for research, imaging, cutting, and optics. These guidelines were established based on the following American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards:
- ANSI Z136.1, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers
- ANSI Z136.5, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers in Educational Institutions
- ANSI Z136.6, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers Outdoors
- ANSI Z136.8, American National Standard for Safe Use of Lasers in Research, Development and Testing
The OES/HSE Research Laser Safety Officer (LSO) maintains the inventory and registration for laser equipment and personnel trained and authorized to use lasers on Johns Hopkins owned or leased property within the Laser Safety Portal (LSP).
